The ETF industry globally boasts around $10 trillion in assets under management, across roughly 10,000 products. In South Africa, our local industry now stands at around R130bn (and c.130 products) and has been growing on average 23% per year since the global financial crisis. In September, the FCSA and the JSE announced that Actively Managed ETFs will be allowed to list in South Africa, which means we could see a much broader range of ETFs becoming available to investors locally.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the difference between Unit Trusts and ETFs
  • Learn how wealth managers use ETFs to build robust, well-diversified global investment portfolios
  • Explore how ETF investing and stock picking is complementary
  • Hear why the invention of ETFs has been compared to the invention of shipping containers in the 1950’s and why they are responsible for the “democratisation of investing”
